I started off this Visual Arts block with showing the students the artwork of American artist Keith Haring. I had the kindergartners pay special attention to how Haring used action lines to show Movement in his drawings.
I also taught kindergartners about foreground and background of illustrations. We talked about about to make figures/objects in the foreground bigger, bolder, and with more details while objects in the background are lighter, "blurrier", and less detailed. I felt these skills are good to learn now, since we will be fully diving in with doing 3 Partner Book illustrations in 3 weeks.
The following two weeks I had students learn about Form in Visual Art. Form is anything 3D in visual language... for example you would say "I like the form of this vase" NOT "I like the shape of this vase." I showed students the American sculptor Alexander Calder and his mobiles. I felt mobiles was a good transition for students to think about changing Shapes into Form. We wrapped up the block by making sculptures out of recycled paper and books.
Next block is Partner Books and then hopefully make some puppets! :)
