After reviewing the rules in the Scholar's Studio, 3rd-6th graders explored Sketching & Drawing during the first week of school. We reviewed the power of Line (Element of Art) in Drawing and the difference between drawing and sketching. To summarize, Sketching focuses on establishing an idea and finding your space and important details within your work -- more of making a 'plan'; while drawing typically implies a more executed, thought-out work of art meant as a final product. Of course, we talked there is always an exception and Art is all about breaking the rules! :)
Drawing techniques covered during the first week were: gesture, contour, cross-contour, and blind contour. During the second week we will explore Value (Element of Art) and the importance of shading, hatching, and cross-hatching techniques. I explain to students that knowing a drawing technique is like having an ingredient for cooking; ingredients add flavor and substance to a drawing -- but you do not always need to add ALL the ingredients for successful work of Art. In fact, sometimes too many ingredients can ruin the final product. I plan to have them look at an artist model for drawing and practicing the proportion of the face during this second week. Stay tuned!

As a reminder: Please, please, please do not wear anything of value to Art class (MWF)! Art class is messy -- clothes / accessories will get messy.
