The three classes voted if they wanted this block to work with clay or to begin our murals, and all classes chose to work with clay.
We dove right into making projects, as we only had 6 classroom days (instead of 9) this Art block due to Thanksgiving Break and our school-wide field trip to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art on Friday, November 20th. [The field trip was amazing, by the way. It was so heartwarming seeing my students have a chance to see my exhibition, nAMUH. Thank you for your support!]
Students are introduced to the three hand-building techniques I teach in Kindergarten, and practice these techniques in first and second grade. With the limited time, I tried a new approach this year. After we reviewed Ceramics/Pottery for a day, I had students choose their own personal projects they wanted to pursue. Projects ranged from figures; pottery sets; replicas of objects from video games; or characters from their favorite books, shows, and movies.
The open, flexible curriculum allowed for many conversations and challenges. We discussed variety of topics from what it means to refine work, working through problems, meeting deadlines, and how the medium worked.
We will glaze the pieces the beginning of next block, and then tackle the murals. Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions by emailing me at [email protected].
