During the second week we explored more techniques and concepts. I reviewed Value and students explored shading, hatching, and cross-hatching.
Here is a video I showed on the Rule of Thirds: https://vimeo.com/14315821. Very helpful for anyone trying to make a composition (including cell phone photos.) I also introduced them to two artists to inspire them. I showed them select images of each artist's work. Here are the artists and their website: Chloe Vallance (Australia): http://chloevallance.com/ Ralph Steadman (UK): http://ralphsteadman.com/ The final week of Drawing & Sketching will be focused on a self-guided drawing project. I am encouraging students to create any project they want, so long as it uses an element of drawing. I am excited to see what they took away from my lessons during the last two weeks. After reviewing the rules in the Scholar's Studio, 3rd-6th graders explored Sketching & Drawing during the first week of school. We reviewed the power of Line (Element of Art) in Drawing and the difference between drawing and sketching. To summarize, Sketching focuses on establishing an idea and finding your space and important details within your work -- more of making a 'plan'; while drawing typically implies a more executed, thought-out work of art meant as a final product. Of course, we talked there is always an exception and Art is all about breaking the rules! :)
Drawing techniques covered during the first week were: gesture, contour, cross-contour, and blind contour. During the second week we will explore Value (Element of Art) and the importance of shading, hatching, and cross-hatching techniques. I explain to students that knowing a drawing technique is like having an ingredient for cooking; ingredients add flavor and substance to a drawing -- but you do not always need to add ALL the ingredients for successful work of Art. In fact, sometimes too many ingredients can ruin the final product. I plan to have them look at an artist model for drawing and practicing the proportion of the face during this second week. Stay tuned! R As a reminder: Please, please, please do not wear anything of value to Art class (MWF)! Art class is messy -- clothes / accessories will get messy. The Fine Arts schedule rotates on block scheduling. Each block lasts three weeks -- when 3rd-6th is in Art; K-2 will be in Music. After a block ends, the classes switch.
This year, 3rd-6th will start with Art with me, and K-2 will be with Ms. Katherine. First block in Art will focus on Sketching and Drawing. As a reminder: Please, please, please do not wear anything of value to Art class (MWF)! Art class is messy -- clothes will get messy. |
